Once there, they discover a corrupt institute and a dark secret taking place in the Shadow Market: Downworlders are being held captive to try and produce werewolf/vampire/warlock babies, and all the women are dying in the process.

#10: “The Land I Lost” by Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees BrennanĪlec Lightwood and head of the New York coven Lily head to Buenos Aires to help Jem and Tessa with their search for the lost Herondale. None of the stories were weak by any means, and I’d rate them all 5 stars, but there were some I connected with more than others, and I wanted to talk about my thought process while reading this anthology.

I thought I would talk about each story individually, in order from my least favorite to my favorite. This review is going to be a little different from my usual reviews. I didn’t think I could love him, or this cast of characters in general, any more than I already did, and I’m so happy to have been wrong about that! I loved that we got to see so much of Jem in particular in each story and that we got to see his character development throughout this large time period. Cassie’s anthologies have always been an exception to that for me, and this is by far my favorite anthology she’s had yet. I don’t usually enjoy anthologies because I have a hard time getting invested with the characters and the story in such short time frames. In the Market is hidden a lost heir and a beloved ghost, and no one can save you once you have traded away your heart. Valentine Morgenstern buys a soul at the Market and a young Jace Wayland’s soul finds safe harbor. But once he was a Shadowhunter called Jem Carstairs, and his love, then and always, is the warlock Tessa Gray.įollow Brother Zachariah and see, against the backdrop of the Shadow Market’s dark dealings and festive celebrations, Anna Lightwood’s first romance, Matthew Fairchild’s great sin and Tessa Gray plunged into a world war. As a Silent Brother, Brother Zachariah is sworn keeper of the laws and lore of the Nephilim. Through two centuries, however, there has been a frequent visitor to the Shadow Market from the City of Bones, the very heart of the Shadowhunters.

There the Downworlders buy and sell magical objects, make dark bargains, and whisper secrets they do not want the Nephilim to know. The Shadow Market is a meeting point for faeries, werewolves, warlocks and vampires.
